About Independence
Independence grew up around a railroad depot on the Green Bay and Lake Pepin line, where Elk Creek meets the Trempealeau River. David M. Kelly bought the depot land in 1876 and named the new village for the country's 100th birthday. Many of its early families were Polish, and in 1902 the small town voted to build a grand brick city hall with a clock tower whose spire can be seen for miles. Today families fish and canoe on Bugle Lake, picnic on Island Park in the middle of the lake, and play ball and camp at Four Seasons Park, where the new public library and community center now stands.
