About Whitehall
Whitehall began in 1860, when Ole Knudtson opened a hotel and blacksmith shop about a mile from today's downtown, and the name Whitehall was chosen by town-site owner Benjamin F. Wing. In 1873 the Green Bay railroad laid its tracks through a wheat field in the Trempealeau River valley, and the town grew up around the line, halfway between La Crosse and Eau Claire. County voters made Whitehall the seat of Trempealeau County in 1877, the courthouse opened in 1884, and Whitehall became a city in 1887. Today the county government center still stands on Main Street, the 1914 brick depot is on the National Register, and families fill the school for its winter Band and Choir Holiday Gala.
