About Inver Grove Heights
After a treaty in 1851 opened the land west of the Mississippi, Irish and German families came to farm here. The Irish settled the east side and the Germans cleared the woods on the west. The name joins Inver, an Irish fishing village, with Grove, a German town. By 1880 there were 240 farms, four churches and four school districts. The village and the township joined in 1965 to make Inver Grove Heights, and the old Rock Island swing bridge over the river is now a park.
