About Maplewood
Maplewood wraps around the north and east edges of Saint Paul. A stagecoach line stopped in the area from 1856 to 1870, and a short-lived rail town called Gladstone was laid out in 1887. 3M opened its research lab here in 1955, and neighbors voted to form their own city in 1957. Farms turned into neighborhoods, and the Maplewood Mall opened in 1974. The city is known for its long, odd L shape; a local historian says there are no maple trees in Maplewood.
