About Kewaskum
Kewaskum is named for a Potawatomi leader who camped in the area in the 1840s and was friendly with the first settlers; his name is said to mean 'retracing his steps.' The village began in 1852 when J. H. Myer settled on a horseshoe bend of the Milwaukee River and built a sawmill and a gristmill, and a general store and blacksmith shop soon served the farms around it. The railroad came in 1873, hotels, stores and grain elevators grew up near the station, and in 1919 an aluminum cookware company started here. Today it calls itself the Gateway to the Kettle Moraine, and families head out to golf, ski, ride the Eisenbahn State Trail, hike the Ice Age Trail and swim at nearby lakes.
