About Jackson
Settlers first came to the Jackson area in 1843, and in 1846 the town was named for President Andrew Jackson. The village grew up as a hamlet called Riceville, named for founder Franz Reis, and it took shape after the Chicago and North Western Railway put a station there in 1872; Reis built a general store, a grain elevator and a saloon by the tracks. It became the Village of Jackson in 1912 and grew fast after 1970. Hasmer Lake sits on its west side, Cedar Creek runs through the southeast, and the 2,312-acre Jackson Marsh Wildlife Area, a state-run stretch of wooded wetland, lies just east of the village.
