About Linden Hills
Linden Hills sits on a rise above Lake Harriet and is named for its linden trees and rolling hills. It was mostly cottages and open land until the Como-Harriet streetcar line came through, and city families began riding out to the lake for concerts and fresh air. The shops at 43rd Street and Upton Avenue grew up along the streetcar line in the 1920s, near the old Fire Station 28 and the 1931 Tudor-style Linden Hills Library. Today volunteers still run restored streetcars from a small station near 42nd Street and Queen Avenue, and music still plays at the lakeside bandshell, the fifth on that spot.
