About Uptown
In the 1880s, streetcars began carrying city people out to cottages, hotels and boating on Bde Maka Ska, Lake of the Isles and Lake Harriet, and by the 1920s houses and shops had filled in the land just east of the lakes. In 1929 the Lagoon Theater at Hennepin and Lagoon avenues was renamed the Uptown, and local businesses later took up the Uptown name for the whole district around Hennepin Avenue and Lake Street. Uptown later grew into a gathering place for artists and musicians, and Minneapolis musician Prince named a 1980 song after it. Today people come for its shops, restaurants and theaters, ride the Midtown Greenway bike trail, walk to the lakes, and fill its streets each August for the Uptown Art Fair.
