About Ladysmith
The Ojibwe called this bend of the Flambeau River a name meaning waterfalls overflowing the rocks, and in 1885 the Soo Line railroad built a station here called Flambeau Falls. Sawmills and a barrel-stave mill grew the town fast, and in 1900 it took the name Ladysmith to honor the mill company's president and his new wife. A year later it became the seat of the new county, and its 1907 Carnegie library and 1912 granite bank still stand downtown. Today families come out for the Northland Mardi Gras, with live music, crafts and water-ski and lumberjack shows, and for the Rusk County Fair and Rodeo each summer.
