About Medford
Medford grew up on forest land along the Black River when the Wisconsin Central Railroad and a lumber mill laid out the town in 1875, selling lots for $25 each. The railroad named it after Medford, Massachusetts, the hometown of one of its officials, and that same year it became the seat of the new Taylor County. Within a year the town had shipped more than 1.5 million board feet of lumber, and the cleared land soon turned to farms. Today families swim in the heated pool and walk the River Walk in the 100-acre City Park, bike north on the Pine Line Trail, and shop two summer farmers markets.
