About Stanley
Stanley began in 1881, when the Wisconsin Central Railroad built through Chippewa County, and it was named for Lemuel C. Stanley, a Chippewa Falls merchant and railroad man. In 1891 the Northwestern Lumber Company opened a big sawmill here and ran its own logging railroad, and the town grew from 500 to 2,500 people in ten years; a tannery and a vegetable cannery came next. After a fire in 1906 burned much of the town, neighbors rebuilt, some in brick from the company's own brickyard. Today families picnic, camp and fish at Chapman Lake Park, the old mill pond the lumber company gave the city, which hosts the yearly rodeo, and the 1901 D. R. Moon Library still serves readers downtown.
