About Lester Prairie
Lester Prairie was laid out in 1886 on the South Fork of the Crow River and took its name from John N. Lester, who first owned the town site. It became a city in 1888, the same year its post office opened, and many of its early families were German. The Great Northern railroad line that once carried wheat east to Minneapolis is now the Dakota Rail Regional Trail, and Lester Prairie is its western end. Today about 1,900 people live here, and children from preschool through grade 12 learn together in one school building on Hickory Street.
