About Mayer
Mayer began as Helvetia, an old name for Switzerland, laid out in the Big Woods by Swiss immigrant John Buhler, who also ran a general store. When the railroad came through in the 1880s, the town moved to the new Mayer Station and took its new name; the post office followed in 1888. The village built its first school in 1887, and Mayer Lutheran High School opened in 1961 with 36 students. Mayer has grown fast since 2000, and today its kids go to Watertown-Mayer schools and cheer for the Royals.
