About Lewiston
Lewiston was named for Jonathan Smith Lewis, a pioneer settler, and was the first stop on the stagecoach line from Winona to Rochester, which made it an important resting place for travelers. It got its post office in 1872 and became a town in 1873. Today the city calls itself the heart of Winona County, a farm town on the edge of the bluff lands between Rochester and Winona. Since 1979 it has hosted the Fools Five Road Race each April, the state's oldest road race for cancer research, which often brings more runners to town than there are people living here. Each June the town gathers again for Heartland Days.
