About Lomira

Lomira began in 1849, when a settlement first called Springfield took its new name and opened a post office; local lore says the name honors Elmira Schoonover, the daughter of an early settler. By 1899 it was a railroad stop of 433 people with stores, grain elevators, hotels, blacksmith shops and a cheese factory, and voters chose to make it a village. It is still a farm town at heart, at the crossroads of Interstate 41 and three state highways, and since 1985 it has also been home to one of the biggest printing plants in the country. Families gather around the K-12 school on Fourth Street, the 2011 community library on Water Street, and the old brick storefronts downtown.
