About North Loop

From the 1880s to the 1930s the North Loop, between downtown and the Mississippi River, was a busy warehouse and factory district beside the railroad, helping make Minneapolis a center for shipping goods across the Midwest. The neighborhood association's history pages say Milky Way candy bars, Creamette pasta and the first pop-up toaster got their start here, and that Ford built Model Ts in a plant here. Many of its six- to eight-story warehouses now form the Minneapolis Warehouse Historic District, and its streets run at an angle to the rest of the city, parallel to the river. Since the 1990s the old buildings have filled with lofts, shops, galleries and restaurants along Washington Avenue, and neighbors walk or bike along the river through James I. Rice Park.
