About Mahnomen
Mahnomen takes its name from manoomin, the Ojibwe word for wild rice, and it sits near the Wild Rice River in the western part of the White Earth Reservation. The town began when the first train pulled in on October 1, 1904, and a boxcar served as the depot until one was built; a hardware store was the first lasting building on the new streets. Two years later Mahnomen became the seat of a new county, the only one in Minnesota that lies entirely within a reservation, and its brick courthouse went up in 1909. In the 1930s Works Progress Administration crews built a fieldstone city hall and the county fairgrounds, and today the city hall also holds the public library, where little ones come for Storytime on Main.
