About Hawley
Hawley grew up beside the Buffalo River where the Northern Pacific Railway laid out a town in the early 1870s, and in 1872 it was named for Thomas Hawley Canfield, a railroad officer. Some early settlers came as a colony from Yeovil in Somerset, England. In the 1970s volunteers built the Viking ship Hjemkomst in an old potato warehouse downtown, and the ship later sailed all the way to Norway. Every June since 1959 the Hawley Rodeo fills a hillside arena among the pines along the river, and the town's library keeps busy all year with storytimes, book clubs and game nights.
