About Red Lake Falls
Red Lake Falls sits where the Clearwater River flows into the Red Lake River, a meeting of waters that was a camp and village site long before a fur trader named Jean Baptiste Cadotte built a trading post here in the late 1790s. In 1876 the guide Pierre Bottineau led French Canadian families here to farm, and soon mills used the rivers' rapids to grind grain into flour. The village was incorporated in 1881, and when Red Lake County was formed in 1896 the town became its county seat, building a red brick courthouse on a hill. Today people float down the Red Lake River in inner tubes each summer, walk the old railroad bridge on the trail, and visit the courthouse and the public library.
