About Mapleton
Mapleton, first called Sherman, takes its name from the Maple River, and its first settler, Uriah Payne, arrived in the spring of 1856. A group of farm families from New York, the Mapleton Colony, followed, and the town was platted where it stands now in 1871 when the railroad reached it. Scottish roots run deep here: neighbors still honor the poet Robert Burns each year, and the Heather Curling Club is the oldest curling club in Minnesota. Today people browse the 1890s brick storefronts on Main Street, borrow books at the 1910 Carnegie library and cheer for Maple River schools.
