About Winnebago
Winnebago was laid out in 1856 as Winnebago City, named for the Winnebago people, who had lately been moved to a reservation nearby. A post office opened in 1857, the railroad arrived in 1871, and for several years the town was the end of the line. The town dropped 'City' from its name in 1905, and in 1916-17 it built a handsome Neoclassical bank on Main Street that is now on the National Register. Today neighbors swim at the city pool in West City Park, camp at the city campground, visit the Winnebago Area Museum and gather at the Muir Library for storytimes and book clubs.
