About Green Bay

Green Bay grew up where the Fox River runs into the bay of Lake Michigan, land the Menominee and Ho-Chunk knew long before Europeans came. The French explorer Jean Nicolet landed nearby in 1634 and a fur-trading post followed, but the first family to stay for good, the Langlades, settled in the 1760s, and the place became a city in 1854. Lumber and then paper mills built the town, and Belgian, German, Dutch and Irish families filled its neighborhoods. Today it is best known as the smallest city with an NFL team, the Packers, which are owned by their fans. People stroll the CityDeck on the river, shop the Broadway District and go to the Saturday farmers market downtown.
