About Marshfield

Marshfield started in 1872 as a log hotel cut out of the forest for the crews building the Wisconsin Central Railway, halfway between Stevens Point and Colby. William Upham's sawmill and shops soon followed, and after a fire swept the young town in 1887, Central Avenue was rebuilt in brick, and much of that downtown still stands. So many rail lines met here that people called it the Hub City, and by the 1920s it shipped more dairy goods than almost anywhere in the country. Today it is known for the Marshfield Clinic, started by six doctors above a downtown store in 1916, and families come out for free band concerts in Columbia Park and the Central Wisconsin State Fair beside the World's Largest Round Barn.
