About Wausau

Wausau grew up beside the long rapids of the Wisconsin River, which French explorers called Big Bull Falls; the name Wausau comes from an Ojibwe word for a faraway place. George Stevens started cutting pine and built a sawmill here in 1840, and the lumber town drew many German families and became a city in 1872. When the forests were gone, Wausau kept growing with insurance and other work, and Hmong families who came at the end of the 1970s are now a big part of town life. Today people bring picnic blankets to Concerts on the Square at the 400 Block on summer Wednesdays, paddle the whitewater course downtown, and visit the Birds in Art show each fall.
