About Stevens Point
Stevens Point grew from a supply post that George Stevens ran at a bend in the Wisconsin River, where loggers floating timber downstream liked to stop. In 1847 the first town plat was laid out around a public square by the river, and a farmers' market has been held on that square since 1870. After years of fires in wooden buildings, the downtown was rebuilt in brick and stone, and today it is a Wisconsin Main Street Community with shops, restaurants and the old Grand Opera House. Families walk or bike the 26-mile Green Circle Trail, gather downtown for the Riverfront Rendezvous each July, and every April the college radio station runs a trivia contest that lasts 54 hours.
