About Menomonie
Menomonie's name comes from the Ojibwe word for wild rice, and the town grew up where Wilson Creek meets the Red Cedar River. Sawmills built in the 1830s and 1840s became Knapp, Stout & Co., which by 1873 was the largest lumber company in the world. Lumber money left the town its best-known buildings: the sandstone Mabel Tainter theater, built in 1889 in memory of a lumberman's daughter, and the schools that James Huff Stout started, which grew into UW-Stout. Today families walk the shore of Lake Menomin at the edge of downtown, bike the Red Cedar State Trail along the river, and shop the farmers market in Wilson Park.
