About Nekoosa
Nekoosa takes its name from a Ho-Chunk word for swift or running water, after the five sets of rapids on the Wisconsin River here. Daniel Whitney built the first sawmill on the river at Whitney's Rapids in 1831, and the settlement that grew around Wakeley's tavern at Point Basse was later renamed Nekoosa. Paper has been the town's work since the Nekoosa Paper Company built its mill on the river in the 1890s, and the mill still runs today. Families come downtown to Market Street with its big painted murals, picnic in Riverside Park by the river, and turn out for Walleye Days, Midwest Fest, the Giant Pumpkin Fest and a Hometown Christmas with a parade and fireworks.
