About Plover
Plover grew up at Plover Portage, a carry between stretches of the Wisconsin River, and in 1844 it was picked as the first seat of Portage County. The county seat moved to Stevens Point in 1868, and the little village came and went until it incorporated for good in 1971; since then it has grown into one of the biggest towns in the county. It sits on flat, sandy farm country, with the Wisconsin River on its west side and the spring-fed Little Plover River running through. Families swim and splash at Lake Pacawa Park, step into the 1870-1910 past at Heritage Park, and come out each July for Celebrate Plover and its fireworks.
