About Port Edwards
Port Edwards began as a sawmill town on the Wisconsin River, with a mill built around 1829 at a spot people then called Frenchtown. In 1869 it took the name of John Edwards, the mill owner who built up the business, and in 1896 his son-in-law turned the sawmill into a paper mill. Papermaking shaped the village for more than a hundred years, and the Alexander House on Wisconsin River Drive now keeps the old paper company's history upstairs, with art shows that change through the year. Today families enjoy the village parks along the river and the bike trails, and the high school still carries John Edwards' name.
