About Whiting
Whiting grew up around a paper mill: in 1893 George A. Whiting started the Plover Paper Company where the Plover River meets the Wisconsin River, and the settlement that formed around the mill took his name. It became a village in 1947 and grew fast after the war, from about 850 people in 1950 to more than 2,000 by 1980. Today it is a quiet village of about 1,600 people right next to Stevens Point, where paper is still made and the village hall sits on Water Street.
