About Northfield
Northfield was platted in 1855 by John W. North and grew as a flour-milling town on the Cannon River. Carleton College opened in 1866 and St. Olaf College in 1874, so it has been a college town for a long time. The Ames Mill, now home to Malt-O-Meal cereal, still stands beside the river. People gather at Bridge Square downtown, and the town's motto is Cows, Colleges, and Community.
