About Prior Lake
Prior Lake is named for Charles Prior, a railroad man who owned land by the water. Dakota people called the lake Bdé Mayá Thó, the Lake of the Blue Banks. The railroad brought a resort trade, and the Grainwood Hotel drew guests in the 1880s and 1890s. Later, families from Minneapolis and St. Paul built summer cottages around the shore. Today it is a growing lake town where people fish, boat and snowmobile on Upper and Lower Prior Lake.
