About Northpoint
Northpoint sits on the bluff above Lake Michigan on Milwaukee's East Side, a long, narrow neighborhood of grand old homes. Its name comes from the 'north point,' a bulge in the shoreline that, with a south point, shapes Milwaukee's harbor; in 1854 two buyers took up 100 acres here. The neighborhood's best-known sight is the North Point Water Tower, a 175-foot tower of cream-colored limestone built in 1873-74 for the city's first waterworks. Large houses in Tudor, Colonial Revival and other styles went up from the 1890s to the 1940s, and in 1973 neighbors started the group now called the Historic Water Tower Neighborhood to protect them. Today people visit the Villa Terrace museum and its garden stairs, walk Lake Park and the North Point Lighthouse grounds, and head down the bluff to Bradford Beach.
