About Murray Hill

Murray Hill is a leafy East Side neighborhood between Oakland and Downer avenues, running from Bradford Avenue north to Hartford Avenue. It is named for James Murray, a Scottish newcomer who arrived in 1835, before Milwaukee was a city, and later owned land north of North Avenue known as Murray's Addition. Homes filled in from the late 1800s into the early 1900s: big houses on Newberry Boulevard, Milwaukee bungalows, duplexes and apartment buildings. Newberry Boulevard was planned as the first of a chain of boulevards linking the city's parks, and it still ties Lake Park to Riverside Park. Today students and longtime neighbors share the blocks, and they shop, eat and catch films on Downer Avenue, where the Downer Theatre opened in 1915.
