About Pulaski
Polish families began settling here in 1883 and named their new village for Casimir Pulaski, the Polish general who helped found America's cavalry in the Revolutionary War. Franciscan friars soon followed, and the parish they served built the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary church, whose twin brick towers, finished in 1931, still stand on Pulaski Street. That Polish heritage comes alive each July at Pulaski Polka Days, a four-day festival that draws polka bands from around the country and closes with a parade and a Mass. The rest of the year families fish the ponds at Veterans Memorial Park, gather there for Sunday music in summer, and turn out for the Easter egg hunt, Pumpkin Palooza and Breakfast with Santa.
