About Rio
Rio began as the Ohio Settlement, named for the settlers who came from Ohio; when storekeeper Delos Bundy asked for an 'Ohio' post office in 1852, the name came back from Washington as Rio. When the railroad came through in 1864, the land was surveyed into a village, and a hotel, a store and a grain warehouse went up beside the new depot. Wheat, then tobacco, beans and potatoes kept the farms busy, and Lincoln Avenue, the old Columbus to Portage road, became the main street. Today the village calls itself 'Camper Country USA' for the campgrounds nearby, and neighbors gather at the library, the historical society museum on Lincoln Avenue and the Viking games at the school.
