About Poynette
Poynette took its name by mistake: when settlers asked for a post office named after Pierre Paquette, an early fur trader in the area, the name was misread as Poynette, and the village kept it. It sits between Madison and Wisconsin Dells, on the northern edge of the rich farmland of the Arlington Prairie, and it became a village in 1892. Rowan Creek winds through town, and Lake Wisconsin and the Wisconsin River are a few miles west for boating, fishing and ice fishing. Just outside the village, the MacKenzie Center's 500 acres of trails, wildlife exhibits and museums draw school buses from all over the state, and families come back for its spring maple festival and its fall festival with hayrides and a hay bale maze.
