About Pequot Lakes
Pequot Lakes grew up in the pines north of Brainerd; a post office opened in 1896, and Walter and Flora Brown filed the town plat under the name Pequot in 1900. The town took the name Pequot Lakes in 1902, and in 2002 it grew to about 18 square miles when the old Sibley Township joined the city. It is best known for its water tower painted like a giant fishing bobber, which local legend says Paul Bunyan left there. Every July since 1938, people line up at Bean Hole Days for beans slow-cooked overnight in pits in the ground, and the Paul Bunyan Trail runs right through downtown.
