About Athens
Athens grew up in the lumber days, when the Abbotsford and Northeastern Railroad, led by lumberman Fred Rietbrock, laid about 15 miles of track from Abbotsford to the village, and it became a village in 1901. Its history is rooted in lumber and farming, and the land around it is still mostly farm country. The village sits almost exactly halfway between the Equator and the North Pole, and not far away a marker shows the spot where the 45th parallel crosses the 90th meridian. Today neighbors gather for story time and book clubs at the library branch, shop the farmers market, and come out for the free Athens Fair, while trails around the village are used for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and walking.
