About Shakopee

Shakopee sits on a bend of the Minnesota River, where the Dakota had a village called Tinta Otunwe, the village of the prairies. A trading post opened in 1851, the town was named for Chief Shakopee and became the Scott County seat in 1853. Steamboats and then trains tied it to the world, and local lime and red brick built much of downtown. Today people know Shakopee for Valleyfair, Canterbury Park, the Renaissance Festival and the river village at the Landing, plus free concerts at Huber Park.
