About Savage

In 1852 traders set up a small post where the Credit River meets the Minnesota River, and Irish and Scottish settlers built a river landing there called Hamilton. In 1904 the town took the name Savage, after Marion Willis Savage, who trained the famous racehorse Dan Patch nearby. During World War II, Camp Savage taught Japanese to military language students, and a shipyard built Navy vessels on the river. Today people walk the Credit River in Hidden Valley Park and shop in a downtown of about 17 blocks along Highway 13.
