About Proctor
Proctor was set up in 1894 as Proctorknott, named for a Kentucky congressman who gave a funny speech about Duluth; the name was cut to Proctor in 1904. It sits on the rim of Thompson Hill above Lake Superior, and for over a century ore trains have rolled down from its big rail yard to the Duluth ore docks. That made it a railroad town. Today neighbors enjoy the golf course, trails, the speedway and the county fairgrounds. Each August the Hoghead Festival honors the railroad past.
