About Hermantown
In 1867 two friends from Prussia, August Kohlts and Lambert Acker, filed for homesteads in the woods outside Duluth, and by 1872 Kohlts had cleared a farm site there. The name honors Herman, a Germanic chieftain. In 1937 the government finished 84 brick Jackson Homes here, and they marked the town's slow turn from farms to suburb. Hermantown became a city in 1975, and it now holds its SummerFest homecoming every July and calls itself the City of Quality Living.
