About Duluth
The Ojibwe called this place Onigamiinsing, and in 1679 the French explorer Daniel Greysolon, Sieur du Lhut, explored the St. Louis River here. Duluth boomed in the 1850s to 1870s as railroads, lumber and iron ore reached the western tip of Lake Superior. Today it is a working port, the farthest inland one that ocean ships can reach, and a lake town with a long lakeside walkway. People come to watch ships pass under the Aerial Lift Bridge, walk Canal Park and Park Point, and climb Enger Tower for the view.
