About Salem Lakes

Salem Lakes is a young village with old roots: it was formed in 2017 when the Town of Salem joined with the Village of Silver Lake, and it takes in small lake communities such as Camp Lake, Lake Shangrila, Benet Lake, Trevor and Wilmot. John Dodge settled in Salem in 1837, and soon after the Bullen family laid out a village on the Fox River, hoping boats would come upriver, and their crossing became known as Bullen's Bridge. Wilmot has had a post office since 1849, and a ski hill there opened in 1938 on glacier-made hills just north of the Illinois line. Today families come for the lakes, the Fox River and the Kenosha County Fair, held every August at the fairgrounds in Wilmot.
