About Genoa City
Genoa City sits right on the Illinois line, and it was named after Genoa, New York, which was named for the city in Italy. James Dickerson laid out the first 23 lots in 1850, railroads came through in the 1850s and 1862, and by 1880 the village of about 300 people had mills, a hotel, a lumber yard and three general stores. For years it was called Genoa Junction, until the name was changed to Genoa City in 1924. A well-known TV soap opera borrowed the name for its make-believe city. Today neighbors meet at the Friday farmers market from Memorial Day through September and at Veterans Memorial Park across from the Village Hall, with its ball field, tennis courts, big playground and Swedish Monument.
