About Sandstone
Sandstone grew up beside the Kettle River around a huge quarry of pink sandstone. The village of Fortuna came first in 1857, and Sandstone was laid out just to the north in 1887; the two joined as one city in 1920. From 1885 to 1919 the Kettle River quarry was the largest sandstone quarry in Minnesota, and its stone was shipped far beyond the state. After the Great Hinckley Fire of 1894, railroad builder James J. Hill helped rebuild the town, and many of its stone buildings date from then. Today people climb the old quarry walls at Robinson Park, paddle the Kettle River's rapids and hike in Banning State Park.
