About Cedarburg

Cedarburg grew up in the 1840s around mills that German settlers built along Cedar Creek, where white cedars lined the banks and gave the town its name. The five-story stone Cedarburg Mill went up in 1855, and the Hilgen and Wittenberg Woolen Mill, opened in 1864, became the largest woolen mill west of Philadelphia. When the woolen mill closed and was nearly torn down, it was saved and reborn as the Cedar Creek Settlement, full of shops and restaurants. Today more than 200 old buildings still stand, many of local limestone, and families come for weekend festivals, the Ozaukee County Fair at Firemen's Park and bike rides on the Ozaukee Interurban Trail.
