About Scandia
Scandia is thought to be the site of Minnesota's first Swedish immigrant settlement. The first log cabin went up on the shore of Hay Lake in 1850, and the first Elim Lutheran church followed in 1856. Gammelgården, the old farm where the community began, became an open-air museum in 1972, and its red log and timber buildings still tell the story of Swedish newcomers. Scandia became a city on January 1, 2007, and people now come for the museum's holiday programs, talks and Swedish festivals.
