About Shorewood

Shorewood began in August 1900, when about 300 neighbors voted to form the Village of East Milwaukee, partly to rein in a noisy amusement park and get better roads; they chose the name Shorewood in 1917. It boomed as a streetcar suburb in the 1920s, when the population grew from about 2,650 to more than 13,000 and many stone houses went up, some built with Ernest Flagg's system. Today the village fits on about a square mile and a half between the Milwaukee River and Lake Michigan. Families walk to the shops on Oakland Avenue, take the stairs down to Atwater Beach, and fill the street each September for the Shorewood Feast.
